I have many favorite photographs and it is somewhat difficult to choose just one. With this in mind, one photograph that will always be imbedded into my memory is one that was on the cover of National Geographic. The photograph shows a 12-year old refugee who was at a camp on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border. What amazes me is her piercing green eyes that pop against the contrasting burnt orange of her hood. The photographer, Steve McCurry, was able to capture her emotion right then and there and make it understandable to the viewer. She looks scared but confident in a way because of her direct stare. It is truly amazing just how expressive eyes can really be and to have the ability to capture that in a photograph is awe-inspiring.

Have you seen the photo that was taken 20 or so years later of the same person?
