I don't think the use of photoshop in photo journalism is necessary. I believe it to be misleading and a form of false advertisement. Photo journalism is meant to show people what is going on in our world and how famous people such as movie stars, the president or heros are doing through a picture or pictures. These pictures are put up in magazines, newspapers, journals and various other forms of media in order to get the viewers attention. The problem is however is that the pictures that are being posted are photoshopped and is creating a false image of something that isn't true. It's misleading to viewers and gives them the wrong impressions. Here are some examples...
This is a bad photoshop image that actually got printed into a magazine to make this already skinny model much more skinnier. This just looks gross and is giving out the wrong message. If little girls are looking at this magazine and see the picture on the left of a model being that skinny, they may think that its okay to be that skinny and you can only model if your that skinny. Not to mention people who may know of this model may think she has an eating disorder which is then hurting how people view her even though the picture on the left is completely false.
The other example I found is of Miley Cyrus on a Seventeen Magazine cover. On the left she looks like she has fresh skin, all bright and perfect, he hair is done perfectly, perfect smile. No flaws what so ever. On the right side however you have a normal teenage girl. How are girls suppose to look up to the left hand picture. Its teaching them that they have to be perfect and have perfect qualities in order to be pretty or even make it big in this world. Which is absolutely false and wrong.
Moreover, photoshopping is insulting and conveys a message that false and misleading. It may make a person look perfect or as for the first picture I posted absolutely disgusting but it also teaches children and even adults a wrong message. They aren't seeing that famous people are just like them and by not seeing this some people feel the need to make changes to their appearance. Pictures are suppose to show truth and express emotions but false photoshopped pictures are just decieving and sad.
